Maasai Mara Game Reserve

Welcome to the Maasai Mara, where adventure and awe-inspiring experiences await around every corner. Picture yourself waking up to the gentle call of a camp porter, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of the Mara North Conservancy. You’re staying at Alex Walker’s Serian Camp, perched high on the banks of the Mara River. Breakfast is a breathtaking experience as you watch hippos playfully wallowing in the muddy river below.

Your day begins with a thrilling walking safari, led by two Maasai guides who will become your companions in this untamed wilderness. Crossing the river on a narrow, slightly wobbly footbridge, you set off on an expedition filled with wonder and excitement.

As you venture away from the river, the Maasai guides’ expertise becomes evident. They track footprints, decipher different faeces, and introduce you to the rich flora and fauna of the Mara. Despite the wet conditions from an early rainy season, nothing dampens your spirits.

The thrill of a walking safari heightens your senses. The adrenaline flows as you traverse the lands of Africa’s most magnificent creatures. In the Maasai Mara, the animal kingdom reigns supreme.

Halfway up the escarpment, an unexpected encounter with a herd of elephants leaves you breathless. Crouched down, you capture the moment with your camera, but your guide soon ushers you back with urgency. You had unknowingly walked between two groups of elephants – a situation that calls for the expertise of your Maasai guides.

Their knowledge and experience shine as they carefully plan a safe passage, and you navigate through the herd. Adrenaline courses through you, but you know you’re in capable hands.

As you ascend the escarpment, the views grow more breathtaking. The vastness of the Mara unfolds before you, with expansive skies that rival the outback of Australia and the Montana plains, earning its nickname as ‘Big Sky Country.’

In just 24 hours, you’ve witnessed lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, hippos, and more. Nature has unfolded its wonders at every turn. Standing atop the escarpment, you feel humbled by the grandeur of the natural world.

Continuing along the escarpment, you take a moment to ask your guides a playful question – their accuracy with spears. Surprisingly, they’re quite skilled, and you find yourself attempting the feat, albeit unsuccessfully. Laughter fills the air as you try your hand at this ancient art.

As you journey back to camp, you discover lion footprints, observe dung beetles working tirelessly, spot giraffes in the distance, and admire the flourishing flora nourished by recent rains. The guides’ sense of humor even leads to a comical encounter with the idea of black mambas, all in good fun.

Finally, you arrive back at the bridge that leads to camp. The adrenaline-filled morning has been a remarkable adventure, and it’s time to freshen up before brunch.

Kenya, and particularly the Maasai Mara, embodies the essence of safari. It’s a place where adventure and discovery intersect with nature’s magnificence. The Maasai Mara is famous for hosting the incredible migration, a sight you may dream of witnessing someday.

Exploring new parts of Africa always evokes a mix of emotions – excitement, curiosity, and a tinge of sadness when the journey ends. The Maasai Mara will immerse you in this rollercoaster of feelings, leaving you with memories and stories to treasure for a lifetime.
